Breeding From conception to foaling
Producing a foal starts with the preparation of the mare for covering by the stallion. It is essential that she is washed and clean ready to receive the stallion and minimise the risk of uterine infection that could lead to an aborted pregnancy
Mares at the stud are teased by the stallion they are to be covered by, this process checks that the mare is fully in season and prepared to allow the stallion to cover her.
At the stud covering is a calm process. The stallions are well mannered and gentle, covering is done naturally in simple head collars or covering bridles.
Here Nefritis II is being covered by stud stallion Bierzo
ares are then scanned at approximately 16 days to check for pregnancy and the presence of twins. All being well and the mare being confirmed pregnant, she is then recheck and confirmed either pregnant or not after 30 days.
Then the waiting begins, approximately 340 days after last cover foaling starts.
Here we see the sequence of shots of Valentia foaling Estiloso in 2009
We watch the mares on total darkness CCTV to monitor safe delivery without the need to intrude on initial stages of labour.
Once head and legs are visible we assist the mare
The foaling sack is removed and the afterbirth tied up out of the way for the mare.
The cord is treated with antiseptic spray - here Kirsty is assisting with the foaling as part of her NVQ Apprentice Groom qualification
Once all the checks are made ensuring mare and foal are safe and well, the most enjjoyable part of foaling begins
Here Estiloso is having a rub down with a towel to assist with drying his coat and warming him up
Around 20 to 30 minutes later the foal starts to get to his feet, we assist with this offering the foal a leaning post if required.
Once up and relatively stable on his feet, the foal starts to look for milk. Here Kirsty offers support to Estiloso whilst he latches onto Valentia for his first drink of vital colostrum.
All that remains is to see the foal pass his first dung / meconium and we can retire to bed
As soon as is possible in the first 24 hours the mare and foal have vet checks to ensure all is well.
and of course...the foal is named.

Branding the young stock
Branding of horses is traditional in many countries, some use freeze branding and other hot branding. In essence there is little difference between the two methods, they use either heat or cold to mark the horse.
Spanish horses are hot branded with a brand design which is approved in design by the stud book and unique to that specific stud.
At St Piran's we have kept with a celtic flavour and have a celtic cross.
The process is quick and stress free - akin to walking on hot coals
Initially the coat is removed to get a good quick brand contact
The brand is on the skin for between 1 and 2 seconds, not long enough to register as a burn pain.
The brand is then treated once with a water resistant aloe based cream and within a couple of days the brand is healed
Our horses are sedated during the process to eliminate any stress and memory of the event. A vet is on site to supervise the event.
Tradition has it that mares are branded on the off side flank and stallions on the near side flank.
Finally, with branding comes a traditional celebration, in Spain with an outdoor party in the searing sun, but in Cornwall we had a BBQ with less than hot conditions!
Spanish and Celtic traditions collide
